We continue our journey through the Oracle licensing articles I wrote for the quarterly journal of the Northern California Oracle Users Group (NoCOUG). In this installment, we discuss Oracle’s policy on licensing its on-premise software in third-party cloud environments. We also discuss the implication of this policy and suggestions on how to effectively navigate it.
“Oracle Licensing in the Cloud-Part II”, May 2017 (Pages 13-15)
I wanted to mention a few points to keep in mind:
- Oracle has made some minor revisions to its policy since my article was published. I suggest reviewing the latest version here: https://www.oracle.com/assets/cloud-licensing-070579.pdf
- Instance types and configurations offered by the different cloud vendors has evolved since the article was written. Dedicated resources are more clearly documented, and multi-threaded/single-threaded configurations are offered by AWS. These can have an impact on license calculation and optimization.
